PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 2010

Happy New Year everyone!

Its my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2010 tennis season – where I’m sure we will enjoy the great tennis and community spirit that makes Sir Winston Churchill Park Tennis Club (SWCPTC) so great. Although it is only January, the club has been busy and I wanted to take a moment to highlight the many activities that are underway. .

The November 2009 AGM marked a transition point for SWCPTC – a new Board of Directors was elected, comprised of both new and familiar faces. The fifteen individuals – for each of whom I have tremendous respect - comprising the 2010 Board will be volunteering their time over the next year to make sure the club continues to be a great place to play tennis, make new friends and be a part of the community. You can contact each of these persons through the email addresses listed on the website.

I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of the outgoing Board – we all benefit from the fruits of their labour – from round robins to teams and court resurfacing. Thank you for your leadership! I would like to take a moment to especially recognize Mike Lynch and Danny Pivnick, who have both completed 5 years on the Board, having volunteered since the fall of 2004.

The 2010 Board will continue the great work of their predecessors, undertaking initiatives that will build on the club’s strengths. Now that the court resurfacing is complete (there will be some adjustments to the courts in early spring) we will turn our attention to the clubhouse which is in need of a facelift. The purchase of new equipment - windscreens and nets, for example – will ensure proper court maintenance.

I am pleased to announce that Kerry Mitchell, Assistant Tennis Professional from 2007-2009 will become our Head Tennis Professional for 2010. I am sure you will agree that his passion for the sport and keen eye make him the right choice for our club. We are currently in the process of confirming the other individuals who will comprise the teaching/coaching team – including a new Junior Professional – and we look forward to providing these updates to you as they are available.

Strategically we will continue to evaluate the feasibility of erecting an Air Supported structure to accommodate winter tennis – and Mike Lynch has agreed to continue his relationship with the Board of Directors to assist us with this endeavour.

As spring approaches, we can look forward to a busy season with many activities scheduled to include:

Although we are a busy club offering choices for competitive and non-competitive players alike, it is club policy that half of the courts are to be kept open for member play.

We look forward to continuing to hear from you as the outdoor season approached. See you on the courts!

Sincerely,

Sue Owen
